Studies has shown that 9 out 10 people get cold sores due to a mutating gene. Researchers from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland have tested different genes to identity the proteins that help prevent this virus. When comparing them to the blood sample of 20 people with cold sores they saw one gene that was constantly mutating. This gene was called IL28B, which doesn't make the necessary proteins in order to fight off the cold sore. This study provide further researcher in identifying treatment for cold sores and other infections such as herpes.
