Differentiating Mosquitos with a Cellphone

The ability to distinguish mosquitos are hard to do so just by seeing them. There is a cellphone application that has been formed at Stanford University that aids in distinguishing mosquitos. This application can hear the beats of the wings that are used for mating. The formation of this application was to distinguish the mosquitos that carry the West Nile Virus, and the ones that carry Zika virus. This application can also be used on any phone, including a flip phone.

The only disadvantage of this application, is that the ability of being able to know the different types of mosquitos but cannot determine if that mosquito has a disease or not. The students of Stanford University are continuing to figure out if there is a possible way of determining if those mosquitos have the disease or not.
Personally, the simple ability of distinguishing is admirable. I have always been bitten by mosquitos, and the future possibility of being able to determine if they carry a disease or not.

  1. That is definitely something I never heard of. That is pretty cool. Never put a though in being able to distinguish between mosquitos just by sound but it makes sense. I am just wondering how close you have to be to the mosquito to actually capture the sound.
